Yes, the sacred Tooth Relic was indeed brought to Dambadeniya by King Vijayabahu III after he rescued it from the invading forces in Polonnaruwa. He built a magnificent, secure temple specifically to house it.
Safeguarding the relic was crucial, as possessing it gave the king the divine right to rule the entire island. The massive fortifications around Dambadeniya reflect how desperately they needed to protect it.
The beautiful Vijayasundararamaya temple, which you can still visit near the rock today, marks the original sacred location where the tooth was venerated during the Dambadeniya era before it was eventually moved to Kandy.
