Dambulla Cave Temple and Sigiriya Rock — is it possible to visit both in one day?
I have one full day allocated to the Cultural Triangle and I want to visit both Dambulla Cave Temple and Sigiriya Rock Fortress. They look close on the map (about 20 km apart). Is it genuinely feasible in one day, or will I feel rushed? What order should I visit them in, and roughly how much time does each site need? I'm moderately fit but not a speed tourist — I like to absorb places properly.

Absolutely feasible in one day — I guide this combination regularly. Here is the optimal plan:
Recommended order: Dambulla first, Sigiriya second
Dambulla Cave Temple (3 hours)
- Arrive by 8:00–8:30 AM before the tour bus rush
- Entrance fee: USD 15 (foreigners)
- The climb is short (20 minutes) but steep — 1,000 steps but they're manageable
- Allow 1.5–2 hours inside the caves; the murals are extraordinary and deserve proper attention
- Back at base by 11:00–11:30 AM
Lunch break (45 min)
- Several good local restaurants around Dambulla town
- Drive to Sigiriya is 20 minutes
Sigiriya Rock Fortress (3.5–4 hours)
- Arrive by 12:30–1:00 PM (avoid 10 AM–12 PM peak heat and crowds)
- Entrance fee: USD 30 (foreigners) — steep but it includes the museum
- The climb takes 45–75 minutes depending on fitness and queue at the lion paws
- Allow 1.5–2 hours at the top studying the palace ruins and views
- Descend and visit the water gardens at the base (often overlooked, worth 30 minutes)
- Done by 4:30–5:00 PM
Key tip: Book a timed entry for Sigiriya in advance via the Sri Lanka Tourism website if visiting on a weekend in peak season — the lion paws section has a bottleneck that can create a 45-minute queue.
Did this in January, moderately fit, 38 years old. Dambulla at 8:30 AM, left at 10:30 AM, lunch in Dambulla town, Sigiriya entry at 1 PM, finished the whole site including the water gardens by 5 PM. Tired but not destroyed. The heat at Sigiriya between 11 AM and 2 PM is brutal — arriving at 1 PM after the worst of midday was actually the right call. Bring at least 2 litres of water for Sigiriya.
One addition: if you have any interest in birdwatching or wildlife, spend 30 minutes in the Sigiriya water gardens just after sunrise (before 7 AM) on a separate morning — the light, birdsong, and lack of tourists make it a completely different experience. But for a standard day-trip itinerary, the plan above from Dinesh is exactly right.
