Yes the premium night clubs in Colombo rigorously enforce a strict dress code that completely contrasts with the relaxed beach towns down south. Men must absolutely wear closed toe shoes long trousers and collared shirts.
Women have much more flexibility regarding the dress code but smart casual dresses and elegant sandals or heels are highly recommended to fit in with the highly fashionable local crowd.
If you attempt to enter wearing rubber flip flops beach shorts or sleeveless athletic shirts the security bouncers will instantly deny you entry at the door without exception.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
