Do I need cash for the highway tolls to Galle? Or do they take Apple Pay now?

We are driving a rental car from the airport to Galle. I read news from 2025 that the toll booths accept Visa cards now.

I don't have much LKR cash yet. Can I rely on tapping my card at the booth?

While the "Card Payment" system was technically launched in mid-2025, it is highly unreliable for tourists.

- The Issue: The card machines at the toll booths often have connection errors or don't accept foreign cards (especially AMEX or Monzo).
- The Risk: If your card fails, you block the lane, and cars behind you will start honking aggressively. There is no "pay later" option.
- The Rule: Cash is King. Always keep 2,000 LKR in small notes (100s and 500s) in the car specifically for tolls. The drive to Galle costs roughly 1,200 LKR. Don't risk the card reader drama.
