We are renting a tuk tuk to drive through small mountain villages. Will the language barrier be huge.

In major tourist hubs like Ella or Unawatuna English is spoken everywhere. However in very deep rural mountain villages or remote farming areas fluency drops significantly. You will absolutely encounter a language barrier.

Do not worry though. Sri Lankans are incredibly friendly and hospitable. Even if they do not speak fluent English they will go out of their way to help you using hand gestures and basic words. You will never feel stranded.

Downloading Google Translate with the offline Sinhala language pack is a brilliant idea. It helps massively when ordering food at tiny roadside shacks or asking for specific directions.
