I want a good Yala experience but everything I read warns of a jeep circus dozens of vehicles swarming one leopard How do I do it WELL which block should I book is morning or afternoon better full day or half how do I get a driver who tracks rather than just chases the radio crowd and is June a good time given some southern park closures I would rather see the ecosystem properly than tick a stressed leopard Honest safari strategy please

Yala driver and tracker so the honest strategy from the wheel The jeep circus is real in Block 1 the most famous and most crowded zone when a leopard shows the radios light up and the vehicles converge it can be a scrum How to do it well One the block choice Block 1 has the highest leopard density AND the highest traffic Blocks 3 and 5 and the adjoining areas see a fraction of the vehicles with good wildlife if you value the experience over guaranteed leopard numbers ask for the quieter blocks Two morning versus afternoon morning (the dawn start) for the coolest most active wildlife and the best light afternoon for leopards coming to water in the heat both work full day (dawn to dusk) is genuinely the best you avoid the gate rush stay in when the half day jeeps leave and have productive midday waterholes to yourself it costs more and rewards more Three THE driver matters more than anything book a driver who TRACKS reads pugmarks alarm calls of deer and langur waits at a likely spot with the engine off rather than one who just races to the radio crowd the tracking drivers find you sightings the others find you traffic ask your accommodation for a naturalist driver by name and tell him you prefer a quiet quality drive over chasing Four June and the closures honest note Yala Block 1 traditionally closes around September for the dry season drought so June is still OPEN and fine the animals are concentrating near water as it dries which actually helps sightings but check current block status when you book The strategy that beats the circus quieter block or full day a tracking driver engine off patience and the resolve to enjoy the elephants the crocodiles the birds and the peacocks not just hunt the leopard the ecosystem properly seen beats a stressed cat surrounded by twenty jeeps every time

Bring patience and a long lens and DO NOT pressure your driver to chase the radio the good ones reward your trust the circus is partly created by tourists demanding the close leopard at any cost

Fellow guide seconding the full day if budget allows the midday hours when the half day crowd has gone are magic empty tracks and animals at water it is a different park after ten am

Did Block 5 on this kind of advice saw a leopard with only two other jeeps and a wonderful unhurried elephant encounter the quieter block trade off is entirely worth it
