Nurse so the safe water plus low plastic answer Tap water do NOT drink it untreated as a rule the tap water is generally NOT considered safe for tourists to drink straight (the local stomach is used to it yours is not) so always treat it or use a safe source this is the main rule for avoiding the dreaded travellers stomach The best low plastic solution a FILTER BOTTLE this is what I recommend to eco minded travellers a good quality filter water bottle (one that filters bacteria and protozoa the common waterborne bugs) lets you fill from the tap and drink safely cutting out the plastic bottles entirely it is the best combination of safe and low waste for extra security in dodgy sources a filter that also handles viruses or pairing the filter with the options below Other methods PURIFICATION TABLETS (chlorine or iodine) light cheap and effective as a backup (a slight taste) good to carry UV PEN works but needs batteries and clear water BOILING totally effective (the safest) but impractical on the move though hotels often provide boiled or filtered water and a flask is handy Refill culture growing GOOD NEWS refill stations and the refill movement are growing many guesthouses cafes and eco minded places will REFILL your bottle with filtered or boiled water (often free or cheap) just ask and there are some public refill points so a filter bottle plus asking for refills hugely cuts plastic Bottled water the fallback bottled water IS cheap and everywhere if you do buy it (check the seal) but the whole island has a plastic problem so minimising it is great My recommendation carry a good FILTER BOTTLE as your main solution (safe and plastic free) plus a few purification tablets as backup and ask cafes and guesthouses to refill with filtered or boiled water you stay healthy and barely touch a plastic bottle the perfect safe and low waste setup
A good filter bottle as the main solution plus purification tablets as backup and asking cafes and guesthouses to refill with filtered or boiled water this is exactly the safe and low plastic setup I wanted knowing the refill culture is growing is great thank you
