We want to drive our rental tuk-tuk into Kandy to see the famous Esala Perahera elephant parade. Are the roads completely blocked off, and where can we park safely.

Do not attempt to drive into the Kandy city center during the Perahera days. The entire lake road and Dalada Maligawa area are heavily barricaded by police starting at 3 PM. Park your tuk-tuk at your guesthouse in the hills (like Hanthana or Ampitiya) and walk down, or take a local bus. The traffic gridlock is unimaginable.

Even if you find parking, getting out after the parade ends at midnight takes hours. Walking is the only sane option.
