Our homestay host in Kandy served us an incredible rice and curry but did not provide cutlery. What is the polite way to eat with our hands.

Eating with your hands is the authentic way! The golden rule is: Only use your RIGHT hand. The left hand is culturally considered unclean. Use your fingertips to mix a little bit of curry into a small ball of rice, then use your thumb to push the food into your mouth. Do not let the food touch your palm. If you struggle, just ask for a spoon; they will happily provide one.

It actually makes the food taste better because you get the perfect ratio of rice to curry in every bite.

Washing your hands before and after is essential. They usually have a small sink near the dining table specifically for this.
