Elephants behind the electric fence on the Udawalawe road - do we stop the van or is that how people get flattened

Driver slowed for a herd on the bund / fence line outside the park the other afternoon. Tourists in the other van were hanging out the windows with phones. Is that a normal August thing. Are we allowed to get out. The fence was humming.

The fence is there because they use that corridor. Stay in the vehicle. Windows up if one comes close. No fruit through the window, no getting out for a walking shot. If the driver stops, 60 seconds of photos from inside, then go. A humming fence is doing its job - do not test it.

We had four on the verge near the Transit Home around 4pm. Looked calm. Still felt stupid when a Belgian guy opened his door. Driver yelled. Do not be him.

Same rule on the Habarana / Sigiriya roads at dusk this month. If they are on the tarmac, you wait. You do not reverse at them and you do not flash high beam in their faces.
