The best way to experience Vesak is to simply walk the streets of Colombo (especially around Bauddhaloka Mawatha or Beira Lake). Wear modest, light-colored clothing (white is best). Join the queues for the "Dansal" (free food stalls) — locals love seeing tourists participate in almsgiving. Marvel at the giant illuminated Pandols, but remember this is a religious event, so keep a calm, respectful demeanor.

Take a tuktuk to the Gangarama temple. It gets crowded but the lantern displays over the lake are stunning.

Yes, photography is totally fine, just do not take selfies with your back to any Buddha imagery.

Do not drink alcohol before going out. The whole country is strictly dry for the weekend out of respect.
