Everyone says to take the train to Ella, but I want to avoid the crowds. Is getting off early at Haputale a good alternative for hiking and views.

Haputale is arguably much better than Ella if you want raw, uncrowded nature. It sits on a razor-thin mountain ridge. While Ella is full of backpacker bars and pizza places, Haputale remains an authentic, misty tea-farming town. The hikes (like Lipton Seat) are spectacular and you will have the trails mostly to yourself.

Can I easily get a tuk tuk from the station to the tea estates.

Just note that it is significantly colder and windier in Haputale than Ella because of the elevation.

Yes, there are dozens of drivers at the station. Negotiate the rate before getting in.

I got off at Haputale and never regretted it. The train empties out there anyway, so it is a peaceful stop.
