Getting off the blue train at Haputale instead of Ella
5 Answers from travellers
Haputale is arguably much better than Ella if you want raw, uncrowded nature. It sits on a razor-thin mountain ridge. While Ella is full of backpacker bars and pizza places, Haputale remains an authentic, misty tea-farming town. The hikes (like Lipton Seat) are spectacular and you will have the trails mostly to yourself.
Just note that it is significantly colder and windier in Haputale than Ella because of the elevation.
Yes, there are dozens of drivers at the station. Negotiate the rate before getting in.
I got off at Haputale and never regretted it. The train empties out there anyway, so it is a peaceful stop.
Scam Watch: ella
People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
