We want to hike to remote, hidden ruins away from the crowds of Sigiriya for photography. Are there any isolated ancient temples in the jungle.

Yes, Ritigala is the ultimate hidden gem. It is a massive ancient forest monastery complex built on a mountain. You hike up beautifully carved stone staircases through thick jungle canopy. Because it is remote and requires a hike, it is mostly devoid of tourists. The photography opportunities with the moss-covered stones and creeping roots are incredible.

Usually yes, as long as you do not block the paths. It is very quiet there.

Yapahuwa is another amazing one. A huge stone staircase with lions, basically empty.

Watch out for wild elephants on the access road to Ritigala if you go late in the day.

Ritigala sounds perfect. Adding it to the itinerary now.

Pidurangala Rock is also great. It is right next to Sigiriya but has a cool reclining Buddha ruin halfway up.

Wear good shoes, the stone paths are very slippery when damp.
