Head to the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya (a bit south of the center) or the smaller neighborhood temples in Borella and Kotte. They are beautifully decorated with handmade bamboo lanterns by local youth groups, and you will not have to fight through thousands of people to enjoy the spiritual atmosphere.

Walking around the residential lanes in Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is also lovely. Every house hangs beautiful bucket lanterns.

Do not miss the floating lanterns on the Diyawanna Lake near Parliament. Very peaceful and no traffic.
