We are staying near Minneriya. The host made us fresh Wood Apple juice, but warned us not to leave the empty shells outside because it attracts elephants. Is this true.

Yes, absolutely true! Wood Apple (Divul) is an elephant absolute favorite food. They can smell the pungent, sweet aroma from miles away. If you leave shells or fruit scraps in the garden, a wild elephant will very likely smash through the homestay fence at night to get it. Always dispose of them securely indoors.

Wood apple juice is amazing though. It tastes like a mix of tamarind and raisins. Just drink it inside!

Elephants actually swallow the hard fruits whole in the wild, and their stomach acids break down the shell.
