Hotel cancelled our booking last minute, what are our rights.
We arrived in Galle and they gave our room away. Is this a common scam here.

This is an incredibly frustrating but known issue with smaller, unverified guesthouses. They sometimes overbook intentionally or cancel a reservation if someone else offers them cash on the spot.
Your best course of action is to immediately contact the booking platform Agoda or Booking to report the issue. They will penalize the hotel and usually assist you in finding alternative accommodation nearby immediately.
To avoid this scam entirely, always book highly reviewed properties and send a direct message to the hotel a few days before arrival to confirm your reservation and expected check in time.
