Can the kids even get in the water in Unawatuna or Mirissa in August?

Not asking which crib hotel. Just: is the sea actually dangerous on the SW coast this month or are people dramatic? We might still overnight Galle for the Fort and want a swim day.

August on the SW coast is wind, dumpers, rips. Red flag means out. Unawatuna, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Bentota all get days you should not swim. East-coast bays - Nilaveli, Pasikudah, some A-Bay inside corners - are the swim season. No lifeguard after dark anywhere. Do not let a hotel boy tell you it is okay if the flag is red.

We paddled ankles in Unawatuna between squalls and still got knocked. Did the real swim in Pasikudah.

Fort walking is fine in rain. Pool at the guesthouse is the honest August swim in Galle.
