Hostel in Galle pushing an orphanage afternoon - is that the volunteering scam people keep mentioning
"Help feed the kids, 4,000 rupees including the tuk, Instagram says changed our lives." We have a free Sunday. I do not want to be the orphanage tourist. Is there any version of this that is not ugly.

Do not pay to visit or "help" an orphanage for a day. The model creates a market for kids to be in institutions and for strangers to walk in. If you want to be useful, donate money or goods to a registered organisation you researched at home, without a photo with a child. A hostel commission tuk is not due diligence.

Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.
Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
