How common is theft from hotel rooms and what precautions should I take?
I'm staying in guesthouses and small hotels. How safe are my belongings and what should I do to protect them?

Theft from hotel rooms is relatively uncommon in Sri Lanka, especially in places with good reviews and staff presence. However, it's always wise to use hotel safes for passports, cash, and valuables when available. For smaller guesthouses without safes, keep important items with you or use a small lockable bag. Most places are honest, but opportunistic theft can happen anywhere. Don't leave expensive items visible in rooms, especially if windows or balconies are accessible. Many travelers use portable door locks or simply keep valuables in a daypack they carry with them. Common sense precautions are usually enough.
Theft is not very common but does happen occasionally. Use hotel safes when available and don't leave valuables visible in your room.
