There are approximately 360 wide, uneven stone stairs leading up from the base of the rock to the main entrance of the Dambulla Cave Temple. It is a moderately strenuous climb, especially if you attempt it during the intense midday heat.

For anyone with average fitness, the climb takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. There are several shaded spots and large trees along the pathway where you can easily stop, rest, and drink some water while enjoying the view.
