I heard locals try to misdirect tourists on the hiking trails. Is this true.

The fake guide scam is incredibly common on the Ella Rock trail. Locals will actively stand near the railway tracks, tell you that you are going the wrong way, and intentionally misdirect you into the thick tea bushes. Once you are lost, they conveniently offer to guide you back to the main path for a massive fee.

To completely avoid this scam, you must download an offline GPS map like Maps.me before you start the hike. The exact, correct path to Ella Rock is clearly marked on the app. If anyone approaches you saying the path is closed or wrong, firmly ignore them, trust your digital map, and keep walking.
