The absolute best most phenomenally scenic and incredibly cheap way to travel between Ella and Haputale is taking the local train. The journey takes roughly an hour and costs mere pennies. You simply buy an unreserved third class ticket at the station and hop on. It weaves directly through the highest most breathtaking tea estates and dense cloud forests. Taking a bus or a taxi forces you onto the busy winding main roads completely missing the spectacular elevated views that make the hill country famous.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
