We are visiting the dairy farms. Should we take the train from there instead of Nuwara Eliya.

Yes taking the train specifically from Ambewela station to Ella is a phenomenal brilliantly scenic idea. Ambewela is the absolute highest altitude railway station in Sri Lanka sitting right in the middle of misty green dairy pastures.

By boarding at Ambewela instead of Nanu Oya you skip the initial crowded section and get to experience the train winding perfectly down through the massive spectacular cloud forests of the Horton Plains border before reaching Ella.
