Climbing Pidurangala before dawn is very common and generally safe but you must be prepared. The trail is completely unlit so bringing a powerful headlamp is absolutely mandatory.
Regarding wild animals you might occasionally hear monkeys or see stray dogs but elephants rarely approach the steep rocky areas. Just make plenty of noise as you walk through the lower forest section to avoid startling any wildlife.
The final section of the hike involves scrambling over massive steep boulders. Doing this in pitch black darkness requires extreme caution and good footwear. It is highly advised to follow closely behind other groups.
