We are staying in Tangalle and want a good climb with historical value. Is the hike up Mulkirigala Rock Temple worth it compared to the famous Sigiriya rock.

Absolutely. Mulkirigala is known as the Little Sigiriya of the south. It involves a steep climb of over 500 stone steps through the jungle. Unlike Sigiriya, it is an active Buddhist temple with stunning Kandyan era cave murals. It is also a fraction of the cost and far less crowded.

Remember it is a sacred site. Unlike Sigiriya where you can wear shorts, you must cover your knees and shoulders to enter the cave shrines at Mulkirigala.

Watch out for the macaques on the upper terraces. Do not bring any food in plastic bags, they will try to snatch it right out of your hands.

The view from the small stupa at the very summit is incredible. You can see the ocean and the surrounding jungle canopy. Go around 4 PM to avoid the heat.
