I'm comfortable driving in developing countries. Is self-drive car rental practical here or should I stick with a driver?

It's doable but challenging. Roads are narrow, signage is poor outside main routes, and local driving style is aggressive. You also need to get your license endorsed at the AAC. Many people regret self-driving after the first day. If you're very experienced with chaotic traffic and want total freedom, it's possible. Otherwise, a driver is much less stressful and often cheaper when you factor in everything.

I rented a small car for a week in the south. It was fine on main roads but stressful in towns and on mountain roads. Would probably use a driver next time for longer trips.

Fair assessment. Might do self-drive for a short coastal stretch and driver for the hills.
