I am visiting Colombo and want to dive the Taprobane East wreck before heading south. Are the currents safe right now and what is the visibility.

The Colombo diving season is currently in its final transition window. You can dive the Taprobane East wreck this week, but you need to be an Advanced Open Water diver. Visibility is around 10 to 12 meters, and the current is mild to moderate. Dive centers wrap up west coast operations entirely by early May.

If you miss the Colombo window, keep in mind that the dive centers are moving their boats to Trincomalee on the east coast very soon, where the visibility is incredible from May onwards.
