Is the third class train to Ella completely unbearable.
We are on a strict budget. Can we survive the long journey sitting on wooden benches.

The third class unreserved train is incredibly cheap but it features hard wooden benches without padding. For a seven hour journey from Kandy to Ella, it can become physically excruciating, especially if the train is completely packed and you have to stand in the aisle.
Third class is a fantastic, highly authentic way to travel if you are only going a short distance, like Ella to Badulla, where you can mingle with friendly locals and listen to them singing songs, but it is too grueling for the full day trip.
If you are on a strict budget, try to get a second class unreserved ticket instead. It costs only slightly more, but the seats are significantly softer and more comfortable for the long haul.
