Observation saloon Kandy Ella worth the 1500 LKR over standard 2nd class
I will do the Kandy Ella scenic train and I see three options 1st class observation saloon 1500 LKR (36 seats only) 2nd class reserved 500 LKR open windows 3rd class 200 LKR Photographer in me wants the open windows but writer in me wants a comfortable rear facing window seat in observation Is the observation actually a good view backwards or a tourist trap

Honest breakdown Observation saloon is the rearmost carriage with backward facing seats and a panoramic curved rear window Pros AC reclining seats no crowding guaranteed window view rear curved glass gives unique receding tracks photo composition Cons backwards motion can cause nausea windows do not open at all so you cannot do the iconic door hang shot or feel the breeze 2nd class reserved is the photographers sweet spot open doors and windows large open window per seat reservable in advance Recommendation 2nd class reserved for the experience If you have mobility issues or get easily nauseous skip observation rear motion 3rd class unreserved is most authentic local but standing room only on the popular trains Train 1015 leaves Kandy 0847
Sit right side of train leaving Kandy for tea estate views left side gets better waterfall views between Nanu Oya and Ella
Bring food and water vendors are limited on this route except a couple of vade and corn cob sellers near Hatton
Some tourist operators sell observation tickets at 35 USD with a 23 USD markup Book direct through Sri Lanka Railways or Visit dot lk to avoid the surcharge
Best photos are between Pattipola (highest railway station in Sri Lanka) and Haputale start camera ready 30 minutes after Nanu Oya
