The 1st class observation car is much more expensive. Is it actually worth it or is 2nd class fine for the scenery?

For the Kandy-Ella journey, 2nd class is perfectly fine and you still get great views. The observation car (1st class) is nice for the big windows and slightly more space, but it can get very crowded with tourists who booked it specifically for photos. If you just want to enjoy the ride without fighting for window space, 2nd class is better value.

Book 2nd class reserved seats in advance online. The unreserved 2nd class gets packed and you might stand. The observation car is only worth it if you really want the panoramic windows and are okay with the tourist crowd.

I did 2nd class and it was great. Made friends with locals who pointed out all the best viewpoints.
