Is there a women-only carriage on the Nanu Oya-Ella special or is that a Colombo commuter thing
Solo, 28, doing the hill special because that is the only train left. Someone on a 2019 International Women's Day article said they launched ladies compartments. Do those exist on the tourist train or am I imagining a pink door. Reserved 2nd was already waitlisted when I looked.

The ladies coach is a Colombo-side commuter thing and it is not always labelled even there. On the Nanu Oya-Ella special you will not find a guaranteed women-only car. Buy reserved 2nd if you can; if it is waitlisted, get to the station early and sit near other travellers / families in the reserved area. Unreserved 3rd at rush is the squeeze, not a horror film.
I rode it mid-week. Carriage was mixed, lots of foreigners, one vendor, fine. I would not wait for a pink door that is not coming.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
