I read the only train route Galle to Ella goes back up through Colombo to Kandy and then over Total 9 plus hours Is driving directly inland through Matara Wellawaya faster Or am I better off doing the scenic train and embracing the day

There is no direct Galle-Ella rail line; you would travel Galle to Colombo Fort (about 2.5 hours), wait, then Colombo to Ella on the main line (around 9-10 hours). Total with connection: 12-13 hours. Driving Galle direct to Ella via the Southern Expressway as far as Mattala then inland through Wellawaya is around 4.5-5 hours by private car. So road wins by half a day. The middle option many travelers choose: drive Galle to Ella (5 hours) one way, then take the scenic train ONE way Ella to Kandy or Ella to Colombo on the way back, getting the iconic journey without the brutal double-leg. Book the Ella-Kandy reserved seat on the 06:40 or 09:30 train for the best light direction.

Practical tip: most chauffeur agencies will drop your bags at your Ella guesthouse and shuttle you to Kandy station to board the train empty-handed for the scenic leg. Best of both worlds.

Did exactly that. Drive in, train out. The 5-hour drive through Wellawaya has elephants crossing the road and rural temples; not a wasted day at all.

Drive in, train out. Brilliant compromise. Cheers!
