Is Vesak 2026 celebrated over two days in Sri Lanka?
2 Answers from travellers
Vesak 2026 falls on Friday, May 1, which is the Full Moon Poya Day. Saturday, May 2, is the designated Day following Vesak Full Moon Poya Day. Both are public holidays. You will see the most spectacular lantern displays and thoranas on these two nights. Please note that because May 1 is also May Day, Colombo will be very crowded with both religious and public gatherings.
Most major light festivals in areas like Gangarama and Beira Lake actually extend for nearly a week around these dates. However, the free food stalls known as dansalas are most active on the Poya day itself.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
