Realistic picture for 2026. WiFi is reliable in city hotels, co-working spaces, mid-range and up guesthouses, and most cafes in Colombo, Galle and the main tourist towns. It gets patchy in budget guesthouses and during heavy rain in the hills. For video calls, your safest play is a local Dialog or Mobitel 4G/5G SIM as a backup hotspot: data is cheap and the mobile network often outperforms house WiFi. Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and WhatsApp calls all work normally; WhatsApp voice/video calls are not blocked. A VPN is not required for routine browsing, but is useful for accessing home banking sites or streaming home-region content, and as a privacy layer on hotel WiFi. For important calls, schedule them for the morning when networks are least congested.

Co-working spaces in Colombo and Ella have proper fibre with backup power. If reliability really matters for a specific day, book a desk there rather than relying on a guesthouse.

Local SIM hotspot as backup, scheduling calls in the morning, co-working day if needed. Perfect, thanks!

Backup SIM saved me. Had a client call from a beach cafe whose "fast WiFi" died, switched to mobile hotspot and finished the call. Get the SIM at the airport.
