Kataragama already finished the Esala - is it just leftover pilgrims and shut stalls if we drive through Saturday
Coming from Yala toward the east. Maps still pin Kataragama as a must. Army write-ups said Pada Yatra through Yala/Okanda in July and the town festival mid-to-late July. Are we two weeks late for anything real. Is the devale even open to foreigners on a normal August Saturday.

The Esala and the Pada Yatra are over. The shrine is a working multi-religious complex year-round - Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Vedda threads. You can visit, dress like a temple, no shoes in the inner yards. What you will not get is the July carnival. Stalls are thinner. Okanda / Kumana pilgrimage traffic is gone.
We stopped Wednesday on the way to A-Bay. Quiet, hot, a few pilgrims. Fine for an hour. Not why you reroute a day.
Do not try to walk the old Pada Yatra track through Yala as a tourist shortcut. That window closed in July and it is a park.
