Staying near Matara then maybe Bundala. River looks calm. Instagram has people on SUPs. I also just read Bundala is crocodile city. Do we let a 9-year-old to the knees.

Mugger crocodiles live in the Nilwala and in Bundala. They are not a myth. People still fish. People also get taken, rarely, horribly. No SUP heroics, no dusk river swim, no "just the edge" on a quiet bend. Hotel pools exist for a reason. Bundala: stay in the jeep.

Same answer on tanks in the dry zone. If locals are not in the water, you are not the exception.
