The latest news is that the online booking system for the trains is now much more reliable. However, the rule for second and third class unreserved seats remains the same you must buy them at the counter on the day of travel.

For the luxury buses to the south just use the Makumbura Multimodal Center. It is much more organized than Pettah.

Be careful of people at the station saying the train is cancelled. They just want you to take a private van.
