Most local "hotels" have outdoor seating or a small window ledge. Take your plate closer to the natural daylight. If you must shoot inside, bounce a small pocket LED light off a white napkin to fill the shadows without making it look artificial.

I just use the flashlight from my friends phone, works like a charm for those clay pot curries.
