If you rent from a premium company, they usually provide comprehensive local insurance. This covers third party liability and damage to the tuk tuk itself. If you crash, the insurance pays for the repairs.

Be highly aware that local Sri Lankan vehicle insurance absolutely does not cover your personal medical bills if you get injured. You must have your own comprehensive international travel insurance for medical coverage.

However, there is always a deductible or excess amount, usually around 150 USD, which is why they take a security deposit. You are liable for damages up to that deposit amount.
