We are thinking of renting a tuktuk to drive ourselves from Kandy to Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. Is this safe for foreigners unused to Sri Lankan traffic.

It is incredibly fun but you must be a highly confident, defensive driver. The A9 highway from Kandy is notorious for speeding CTB buses that will run you off the road. You must have a recognized Sri Lankan driving permit (arranged by the rental agency). Also, avoid driving at night in the Cultural Triangle due to wild elephants roaming the roads.

We did it and it was the highlight of our trip! Just pull over to the dirt shoulder whenever a bus honks behind you.

Do not leave luggage visible in the back of the tuk-tuk when you park it at tourist sites. It will get stolen.

Sounds like an adventure. We will stick to daylight driving only.
