Rules for walking around Colombo during Vesak
8 Answers from travellers
There are no curfews; the city is awake all night celebrating. However, the entire city is essentially a religious zone. While tourists in shorts are tolerated, it is highly recommended to wear lightweight long pants and cover your shoulders out of respect, especially if you get near the main Pandol displays or temples. Also, absolutely no alcohol consumption on the streets.
Yes, taking photos of the lanterns is perfectly fine. Just do not turn your back to pose with Buddha statues.
Try the free food at the Dansal stalls! It is completely safe and delicious.
I wore a white linen shirt and the locals were so happy to see me participating in the culture.
Walk, do not take a tuk-tuk. The traffic is paralyzed anyway.
Be prepared for insane crowds. Keep your wallet safe in your front pocket.
