Self driving a regular car not a tuktuk is it sane for an experienced driver here
I drive confidently everywhere at home including chaotic places and part of me wants the freedom of a self drive car not a tuktuk an actual car Is this sane in Sri Lanka the traffic looks intense the overtaking alarming the buses terrifying What is the license and permit situation for a car how bad is it really compared to say southern Italy or India and would I genuinely enjoy it or spend two weeks white knuckled wishing I had hired a driver Honest road reality please

Car rental company so the honest road reality including against your comparisons The license and permit a self drive car needs your home license PLUS an International Driving Permit endorsed with the Sri Lankan recognition permit the same endorsement the tuktuk and scooter threads describe obtained via the Automobile Association or the motor traffic department most self drive rental companies arrange the recognition permit for you allow lead time driving is on the LEFT The road reality honestly it is intense and your Italy and India comparison is the right frame busier and more assertive than southern Italy not as extreme as the worst Indian cities the specific challenges buses are the apex predators they overtake into oncoming traffic and stop without warning expecting everyone to yield (everyone does) tuktuks weave pedestrians and dogs and the occasional cow share the road undivided two lane roads carry overtaking in both directions simultaneously and hill country roads are narrow winding and slow Would you enjoy it the honest calculus for a genuinely confident assertive driver who reads chaotic traffic well it is DOABLE and on the quieter roads the dry zone the coast roads off peak the tea country back lanes it is even enjoyable and freeing BUT and this is the real point the cost difference between self drive and a car WITH a driver is small here the driver often costs little more than the self drive rental once you add the recognition permit and insurance so you are choosing to take on the stress the navigation the parking the police stop risk and the accident liability to save very little money this is why most experienced drivers who CAN self drive still hire the driver here the math favours it unlike in Europe My honest recommendation if driving itself is a joy you seek and you want total independence rent and drive the quieter regions if you want to actually SEE the country out the window and arrive relaxed the driver is barely more and removes every stress in southern Italy I would say drive here I lean toward the driver and I sell the rentals
The buses are the apex predators is both funny and the single most accurate thing written about these roads they simply expect the world to yield and it does
From the drivers seat the accident liability point is the one to weigh hardest as a foreign self driver any incident is a complicated stressful situation in an unfamiliar system the local driver absorbs all of that for you
The driver costs barely more than self drive so you are paying in stress to save nothing is the math I had not done that genuinely changes my mind leaning driver now thank you for talking me partly out of your own product
