Solo female 4 weeks honest debrief what worked what did not
I just finished 4 weeks solo from Negombo to Jaffna and back Many reviews are too rosy or too scared so let me ask the forum What is your honest assessment of the genuinely sketchy areas the bus harassment risk by region and which female only or female friendly hostels are the actually good ones not the marketing line

My honest experience after 4 weeks solo Bus harassment risk is real on crowded local routes from Colombo to coast and on the 187 airport bus Sit in the front section near the driver never the back where standing space gets pressed Trains are notably safer second class reserved best Hill country east coast and Jaffna felt safest Mirissa Hikkaduwa had the worst street harassment from drunk male groups Genuinely female friendly stays Bunkyard Hostels Colombo Drift Bnb Galle Hangtime Hostel Mirissa (female dorm) and Tea Stories Haputale Avoid hostels that mostly host all male groups Use PickMe never random tuktuk at night and save tourist police 1912 number
Jaffna and the north are seriously underrated for solo women very respectful culture and women run guesthouses in Point Pedro and Karainagar
Hill country tea estate workers are some of the kindest people you will meet Solo female hikers regularly report feeling safer than in Colombo
Some trains have women only carriages during morning and evening peak hours look for the pink stripe on the door
Wearing kurtas or loose long dresses outside beach towns made a noticeable difference for me Less staring Less catcalling
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
