Night bus to Jaffna for Nallur - AC or non-AC and do solo women actually get a seat that is not a story
Solo, 31, want the evening AC Colombo-Jaffna so I have Friday at the kovil. Facebook said sit downstairs near the driver, another said the AC is just a colder grope. I am not doing the night van with a WhatsApp stranger.

Buy a named AC intercity (the big private coaches / CTB AC where they run) from the proper stand, reserved seat if they sell one, bag in the hold with a photo of the ticket. Sit near other women / families if you can. Non-AC night is cheaper and more stop-and-start. Harassment is not the default on the Jaffna AC; it is also not impossible. Headphones, aisle if you want an exit, say no once, change seats, tell the conductor. Do not take a "friend's van, same price".
Toilet before, water, do not drink so much you are stuck. Jaffna bus stand tuks in the morning are normal.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
