Yes, absolutely. The Northern Line trains (like Yal Devi) that start in Colombo pass right through Anuradhapura on their way to Jaffna. It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours from Anuradhapura to Jaffna.

The scenery changes dramatically past Vavuniya. The jungle gives way to salt flats and palmyra palms. It is a gorgeous train ride.

Book in advance! When the train arrives from Colombo, it will already be completely full. If you don't have a reserved seat, you will be standing all the way to Jaffna.
