If the train experience was too chaotic, booking a luxury AC highway bus is your best alternative. The most reliable online platform for this is BusBooking.lk, which lists all major private bus routes across the island.
You can also use the PickMe smartphone app. They recently integrated a fantastic express bus booking feature that allows you to easily reserve comfortable seats on specific routes directly from your phone.
Make sure you explicitly book the Super Luxury AC buses. They are significantly faster, highly air conditioned, and guarantee you a proper, padded seat for the entire journey, unlike the government red buses.
