Three-wheelers are nosing onto Dalada - still a pedestrian street or are tuks actually allowed
9.33 on Dalada Veediya. Last torch went in a while ago. A bajaj just crept past the Clock Tower like it owned the place and three more are stacking behind it. We need a ride to Katukele. Is this street actually open to three-wheelers now or is that a police jeep-shaped exception and we are about to get waved back to Gopallawa.

One bajaj on Dalada is usually someone who should not be there, or a uniform. The published vehicle corridors are William Gopallawa Mawatha and Old Peradeniya Road. Dalada / the lake front can stay cones-and-tape well after the casket is in the gate. Walk inland or to Gopallawa and pick up there. Do not stand in the relic street flagging a tuk that is about to be turned around.
Last night the first three-wheelers we actually sat in were one block off the lake, not on Dalada. The ones nosing the tape got shouted at.
If you can still see tape or a uniform on the kerb, it is not a tuk rank. Season hotline 081 22 33 333 if you are actually stuck. Gopallawa is the corridor they told drivers to use.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
