What is the best way to travel from the hills of Kandy straight to the surf in Arugam Bay while carrying a 9 foot longboard.

With a 9-foot board, the public bus from Kandy to Monaragala/Pottuvil will be a nightmare. The conductors will likely refuse it. The best option is to hire a private minivan or a large taxi from Kandy directly to A-Bay. It is more expensive, but it takes about 5 hours and guarantees your board arrives safely.

Do not take the train; there is no direct rail link to the east coast anyway.

Try posting in the Sri Lanka Surf Facebook groups. You can often find other surfers in Kandy looking to share a van to the east coast.

Thanks, I booked a van. Costs about 18,000 LKR but totally worth it to save the board.
