We are surfing the beach breaks in Koggala. Is the nearby Kataluwa Purvarama temple open to foreigners to see the famous 19th century Kandyan style murals.

Yes, Kataluwa Purvarama is open to foreigners and is an absolute hidden gem. The 19th-century murals are incredibly unique because they blend traditional Buddhist Jataka stories with depictions of European colonial life, including Queen Victoria and British soldiers. Just ensure you are dressed properly (no surf wear) before entering the image house.

Do not use flash photography inside the mural room. The flashes degrade the natural pigments of the 200-year-old paint.

There is also an ancient printing press in the temple grounds that was brought over by the Dutch. Very cool piece of history right next to the surf spots.
