I am heading to Arugam Bay next week. Is it true that the Pottuvil Point surf break is located right next to an ancient 2000 year old Buddhist temple in the sand dunes.

Yes, it is entirely true. The Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple complex sits right in the dunes near Pottuvil Point. Legend says it marks the spot where Princess Viharamahadevi washed ashore over two millennia ago. You can literally catch a world class wave and then walk up the beach to see ancient stone pillars emerging from the sand.

Pottuvil Point itself is starting to work now that the easterly winds are setting in. It is a long, peeling right hander. Just remember to dress appropriately if you actually walk up into the temple ruins after your session.

It is one of the most surreal surf spots globally because of that backdrop. Make sure to go at sunrise. The lighting on the ancient statues with the ocean in the background is incredible.
